Inspired by existing AR/VR applications, I came up with seven concept storyboards, ranging from AR flashcards to collaborative VR scenarios. After discussing these ideas with peers and using a decision matrix, I decided on a VR game focused on improving speaking and listening skills. Since I love fantasy games, I wanted to set the game in a fantasy world where players interact with NPCs, leading to multiple story paths and replayability.
To validate my concept, I researched language proficiency scales and looked into studies on how gaming already helps with language learning. To increase my user empathy, I tested popular language apps/games like Mondly VR and Duolingo which helped influence my design decisions. I then developed an identity for my game by drawing inspiration from minimalistic games like Journey and Zelda. The low-poly art style was chosen for its aesthetic appeal and processing efficiency.
I developed wireframes and refined them through a user testing workshop, resulting in a 3-panel VR layout. I then enhanced NPC interactions with feedback and data. I also implemented quality-of-life changes such as curved UI elements, following Meta’s guidelines. I also explored using hand tracking for greater immersion using Meta Quest headsets.
The final product was a fresh take on language learning, earning positive feedback from my tutors. I believe this concept, in addition to other language learning methodologies, could contribute to becoming proficient. Further, the gameplay is easily adaptable for various skill levels and there is potential for additional storytelling and learning experiences.
